for Young Development Professionals

The last few years have seen unprecedented
events of natural disasters in the South Asia sub-region. Most
of these disasters are not confined to one country and therefore
the magnitude of loses to life, livelihood and property are
enormous. Natural disasters are closely associated with
unsustainable development, affecting large sections of the
population especially the poor. Sustainable development and
Disaster management are mutually supportive goals. Unless
sustainable development practices are adopted, higher risks from
disasters will continue and the severity of their impact will
increase. While concerned governments, NGOs, bilateral and
multilateral agencies and corporate houses and the affected
communities are putting their efforts into relief and
rehabilitation processes, adequate information systems, proper
planning and streamlined coordination mechanism needs to be
strengthened.
Recognising this, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and the
South Asia Youth Environment Network, supported by UNEP has
undertaken few initiatives. These include documenting learnings
from tsunami in four countries –India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and
Indonesia, supported by Oxfam America; development of resource
materials and capacity building youth. As part of providing
capacity building opportunities for young development
professionals on disaster management, CEE with SAYEN, announces
a seven week international internship on Disaster Management.
This internship is supported by Swiss Agency for Development
and Cooperation (SDC). Other details of the programme are as
follows:
Objectives:

To sensitize young professionals from the South Asia
sub-region and improve their understanding and skill levels in
the management of disasters

To provide them with
experience of working with other organizations in the field of
Disaster Management, Field methods for
assessing the impacts and needs, analytical methods to assess
the situation and needs, Communication and management methods.

To bring in the perspective of Sustainable development in the
field of Disaster Management.
Programme Outline
Duration: 7 weeks
Timeline: 13th February 2007-5th
April 2007
Orientation: First week i.e. 13th-18th
February 2007 the interns will attend an orientation
programme. This would include classroom sessions and a field
visit.
Field Placements: The interns will be placed with
organizations for a period of 5 weeks from 20th February 2007
to 26th March 2007 (Based on the matching of
expectation of both the organization and the intern the project
to be undertaken by the intern will be decided).
Experience Sharing: The last 1 week (29th
March 2007- 5th April 2007) there will be sharing
of experience and learnings from each others projects by the
interns.
Participant representations
The orientation and experience sharing activities would
be conducted in India and the participants’ placement would be
made with organizations working in the field of Disaster
Management in India.

Maximum 2 years of experience

Skilled in Computers and Communication
5.
Fluency in English, a must.
