The last few years have seen unprecedented events of natural disasters in the South Asia sub-region. Most of these disasters are not confined to one country and therefore the magnitude of loses to life, livelihood and property are enormous. Natural disasters are closely associated with unsustainable development, affecting large sections of the population especially the poor. Sustainable development and Disaster management are mutually supportive goals. Unless sustainable development practices are adopted, higher risks from disasters will continue and the severity of their impact will increase. While concerned governments, NGOs, bilateral and multilateral agencies and corporate houses and the affected communities are putting their efforts into relief and rehabilitation processes, adequate information systems, proper planning and streamlined coordination mechanism needs to be strengthened.

Recognising this, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and the South Asia Youth Environment Network, supported by UNEP has undertaken few initiatives. These include documenting learnings from tsunami in four countries –India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia, supported by Oxfam America; development of resource materials and capacity building youth.
